SOUND DEADENING AND INSULATION

Trunk Sound Deadening

It’s impossible to have a comfortable ride if you are always annoyed and distracted by various noises. Quite often, sounds come from the rear part of the car, being a problem for rear-seat passengers. These sounds are road noise that comes from the trunk, or trunk panels metal rattling. Such sounds are common for almost all vehicles, except for pickup trucks.
It is trunk sound deadening that will remove all these noises and make your driving more comfortable. The operation will take not longer than a day, being not so difficult even for no-experience installer.

What will you need for that?

  • Screwdrivers or a tool set
  • Clip remover (to avoid buying new clips)
  • Utility knife and scissors
  • Degreaser and a piece of cloth
  • Roller for first-layer roll-down
  • Sound deadening material and sound and heat insulation.
2 types of material will ensure highest possible effect and enhance heat insulation of your automobile

First, find the disassembly instruction of your car (document must be available online).
Remove everything from the trunk.

Following the guide, disassemble the rear part

Remove rear seats (if needed to reach wheel arches and trunk floor).
Disassemble all plastic panels on both sides of the trunk.
Remove the floor coating and remove the details impeding  installation from the metal body of the floor.
Give all metal parts of the trunk a good wipe with a degreaser. It’s essential to ensure reliable adhesion of the material.

Now start applying on the trunk surface the first layer – sound deadening material. For this purpose, we advice to use Noico 2mm.

Leave fixturing points of parts and coating open.
Applying the material sheet to the body, immediately cut the sheet in the place of a fixturing point with a knife.
You’d better start applying from the central part of the trunk. Sheets should be small to better fit surface bends and transitions; in this case you will have to cut corners less. Cutting corners and edges, try to cover the whole surface without leaving cracks or gaps — this will further decrease passage of sound and enhance soundproofing efficiency.
When making body sides, try thrusting the material into fenders as deeply as possible — such an action will also contribute to the soundproofing effect.
Wheel arches will require a thicker material or two-layer application. These places are most vulnerable to noises caused by the road, wheels, or suspension.
Each material sheet must be rolled down thoroughly for highest possible adhesion between the material and body. This will improve material efficiency and protect metal against moisture and corrosion.
So, we have our trunk fully covered with the first layer. Make sure the material is applied with no cracks, and all sheets are rolled down.

Next step is to install the 2nd layer – heat and sound insulation. On this step, it is highly recommended to use Noico Red 4mm (170mil)

The material is the optimal thickness to provide fair heat and noise insulation and comfortable operation.

Be particularly careful when applying this material; leave no cracks or gaps between the sheets. Any breach will let sound and heat get in, thereby deteriorating the heat insulation and soundproofing effect.

Sheets should be measured in advanced and cut as per required dimensions and corners. Do not overlap sheets, as it will impede installation of the trunk coating, and plastic panels can fail to latch at fixture points.

Do not forget to cut holes for fixture points and plastic panel clips.

Having applied the material to all trunk surfaces, make sure there are no cracks or gaps between the material sheets.
Well, the trunk insulation is completed and it can be reassembled. Be careful and make sure all the parts click into their places.

Now we continue with the trunk lid

Having disassembled the lid, degrease all interior and exterior metal bodies.

Cover the internal part with the sound deadening material through apertures. For that, cut small material sheets and carefully roll them down across the internal cavity of the lid.

Now apply to the internal part the second layer – sound and heat insulation

Try to cover as much area inside apertures as possible.
Now cover all the external lid apertures with the sound deadening material.
Make sure all the apertures, even the smallest of them as wire holes, are covered.
Now thoroughly roll down all material pieces.

The lid is ready, let’s assemble it.

As you can see, trunk sound deadening is not that difficult and doesn’t require professional skills.

All you need is proper tools and desire to reduce vibration and noise from trunk compartment and road.

Remember that to ensure complete acoustic comfort inside, you will have to perform soundproofing of the floor and doors.  This will also improve heat insulation, making the car warmer in winter and cooler in hot summer.

Have a good ride!
